Medical Council of Malawi

THE ORGANISATION

The Medical Council of Malawi (Council) is a Statutory Corporation established under the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act No. 17 of 1987 Chapter 36:01 of the Laws of Malawi. The Council exists to protect the general public and guide the medical, dental and allied health professions. The Council has the mandate of registering practitioners and health facilities, regulating training of health care workers, and managing health care related
complaints.

To fulfill its mandate, the Council would like to fill vacant strategic posts. The positions are Financial Accountant, Communications and Planning Officer, and Administration and Human Resource Officer. Therefore, applications are invited from qualified, motivated, innovative, energetic and experienced persons of Malawi origin to fill the positions tenable at the Council’s office in Lilongwe. The following are the details of the posts:

A. GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Accountant shall support the Director of Finance and Administration in leading the finance functions of the Council. Grade MCM 4.

B. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the leadership of the Director of Finance and Administration the Accountant shall:

  • Line manage the Assistant Accountant and Accounts Clerk.
  • Monitor revenue collection, receivables, expenditure and payables.
  • Assist management in preparation of annual budgets and advise management on expenditure patterns to ensure expenditure is within budget.
  • Ensure monthly reconciliation of ledger books.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of control measures and ensure that they are adhered to always.
  • Manage inventories and carry out quarterly stock taking of inventories and assets.
  • Compile financial data regularly and publish timely financial statements, and handle monthly, quarterly and annual closings.
  • Manage balance sheets and profit/loss statements.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and regulations.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and Administration.

C. JOB REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, education, experience, and skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related accounting field plus professional qualification such as ACCA, CIMA plus at least three (3) years experience in busy accounting environment. Those with Masters will have an added advantage.
  • MUST have experience in Sage programs.
  • Strong knowledge in Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Able to work independently.
