The College of Medicine (CoM) was established in 1991 as a constituent college of the University of Malawi. Its mission is to be an academic centre of excellence in the training of doctors and other health professionals in clinical service and medical research, responsive to the health needs of Malawi and its neighbours within the Southern African region. In pursuit of the mission, the CoM is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacancies:

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE EDUCATION AND TRAINING OFFICE (COMETO)

JOB SUMMARY.
Reporting to the Chair of COMETO, the Clinical Skills Training and Laboratory Officer will be mainly responsible for facilitation of clinical skills training using all the resources available within the clinical skills laboratories at all 3 campuses (Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mangochi). The Clinical Skills training and laboratory officer will teach alongside and support teaching staff in the use of the clinical skills laboratories. The post includes responsibility for maintenance, stocktaking and requisition of necessary items to keep the clinical skills laboratory in functioning order.

Responsibilities

Among other duties and responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:
• Work alongside teaching staff to plan, facilitate and deliver clinical skills teaching
• Plan and deliver first aid teaching to enrolled short course students
• Ensure equipment is stored safely and securely and is maintained in a clean and working state
• Organise skills laboratory allocation in the diary so that no overbooking occurs and that requests are accommodated efficiently.
• Ensure bookings are appropriate, approved and properly documented.
• Work with Lecturer in Clinical Education to ensure that clinical skills laboratories have an adequate stock of materials, equipment and supplies.
• Collaborate with Lecturer in Clinical Education and Faculty in managing the clinical skills laboratory to ensure efficient usage and access for students
• Provision of technical support to staff and students
• Setting up skills laboratories for classes and selecting appropriate equipment and resources for use within sessions
• Planning and preparing skills laboratories, materials and equipment for clinical skills practice according to recognized safety procedures
• Ensuring that students receive necessary learning materials
• Maintaining safety and cleanliness in the clinical skills laboratories at all times

Skills

• Experience of clinical teaching e.g. ETAT or IMCI
• Experience in simulation training and/or multimedia based education
• Evidence of organizational ability (e.g. committee memberships)

Qualifications

• Diploma in Clinical Medicine or Diploma/BSc in Nursing and Midwifery or equivalent
• Two years’ relevant professional experience gained through working in a clinical setting
• Fluent in English
• Teaching experience and/or qualification
• Computer literate (MS Word, MS Excel)
